Award winning actress Reese Witherspoon has attended the screening of the movie 'Wild' at London Film Festival. In the film, she plays a real-life woman who goes off into the wilderness on a journey of self-discovery.

The film is based on the best-selling novel "Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail" from author Cheryl Strayed. Both Witherspoon and Strayed attended the film's UK premiere as the film was screened at the London Film Festival.

Speaking on the red carpet, Witherspoon recalls her less-than-enjoyable encounter with a tent during filming.

"The director wanted to make sure I didn't know how to work any of the props before I actually got on set. So they handed me the tent and I'd never put up a tent like that," Witherspoon said. "And so he basically filmed me for two hours trying to figure out how to put up the tent. And several of those things, like he didn't tell me how to work the stove, so when you see me really frustrated I'm actually like really shaking the tent out of frustration. It was good. It ended up looking authentic."

The actress admits it was a challenging, but liberating role.

"I think the biggest challenge is just putting yourself out there, doing scary things, taking that leap, jumping with two feet into scary new areas, so for me this movie was a challenge just mentally to be more gritty, more raw than I've ever been in a film, but it was liberating in another way," Witherspoon said.

For author Strayed, Witherspoon proved to be an "intelligent" fit to play her on the big screen.

"She read the book and immediately I got a call saying she wanted to option the book and she wanted to star in it herself," Strayed said. "And so we had this long conversation about, why? She talked to me about her life, about the parts of the story that resonated with her emotionally, pieces of it that she related to. And she just struck me right away as such a real person."

"Wild" is released in the US on December 5th and in the UK on January 16th next year.
