The 30th China Adolescents Science and Technology Innovation Contest, co-sponsored by China Association for Science and Technology and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), kicked off Thursday at AsiaWorld-Expo in Hong Kong.

More than 500 young talents from China's 31 province-level regions, Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (XPCC), Hong Kong and Macao, as well as 12 other countries including Germany, Sweden, India and Brazil, will compete and exchange ideas in the next four days.

Vice Chairman of China Association for Science and Technology Shang Yong, Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying addressed the opening ceremony. Head of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in Hong Kong Zhang Xiaoming attended the ceremony, together with some 3,000 teachers and students.

"We hope this contest will further promote youth science and technology innovation exchanges between the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong, and help raise concern and support for technological innovation and personnel training in Hong Kong," said Shang.

Leung said Hong Kong has the unique advantage of "one country, two systems" and plays the role of "super connector" between the mainland and the world in the science and technology field. He hoped that participants would deepen friendship and common efforts in technological innovation to make contributions for the country and the human society.

This was the second time Hong Kong SAR hosted the event. Hong Kong hosted last event in 1998 after its return to the motherland.
